The recent release of the Illinois Report Card offers a critical opportunity to evaluate the state of education compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, a recent article in The Patch underscores persistent gaps in academic achievement since 2019. To better understand where we stand and how we can address academic performance at Lake Forest High School, let’s take a closer look at the data.
Academic Proficiency: Falling Short of Pre-COVID Standards
Proficiency levels at Lake Forest High School (LFHS) remain below pre-pandemic benchmarks, reflecting broader statewide trends. In 2019, 81.7% of LFHS students met expectations in English Language Arts, but by 2024, that figure dropped to 68.2%. Similarly, math proficiency fell from 75.5% to 65.6%.
While these declines mirror statewide patterns, LFHS’s reputation as a high-achieving institution calls for a higher standard. With the school ranked in the top 1% of non-selective Illinois schools for SAT scores, we should aim to lead the state’s academic recovery—not merely match it. Our students are capable of meeting and exceeding pre-pandemic levels, setting a new bar for academic excellence.
Attendance Gains vs. Administrative Resource Allocation
On a positive note, LFHS has made strides in student attendance, now ranking in the top 2% statewide. However, the student-to-administrator ratio—62.7:1 at LFHS compared to the statewide average of 135.7:1—raises questions about resource distribution. Are these administrative resources being optimized to support academic growth and recovery?
New Tools for Success: SAT Diagnostics and Tutoring
At a recent school board meeting, Principal Erin Lenart introduced promising initiatives to boost academic outcomes. The SAT Diagnostic Tool and tutoring program have helped participating students improve their scores by 150-200 points. As Illinois transitions to the ACT in 2024, this program will adapt to meet the new standards, remaining accessible for students.
These proactive measures are commendable, and we strongly encourage families to take advantage of the opportunities provided.
Accountability and Transparency: The Path Forward
To ensure sustained progress, the community must remain vigilant in holding our schools accountable. Proficiency and growth metrics should remain at the forefront of our discussions. In the coming weeks, we look forward to the release of the District Dashboard, which will report on the School Board’s priorities and progress—particularly in achieving Academic Excellence, the board’s top goal.
While LFHS has made notable progress, continued oversight and a relentless focus on improvement are essential to how we can address academic performance at Lake Forest High School and surpass pre-pandemic standards.
As a community that values academic excellence, it’s time to rally together, demand transparency, and support our students and educators in their pursuit of success.
